The second biodiversity census carried out in the Empuriabrava canals has confirmed the high ecological richness of this environment, with more than 200 species identified.
Among the most outstanding findings, the nudibranch Polycera hedgpethi was detected for the second time in Catalonia, with more than twenty specimens and several clutches, confirming its establishment in the canals. Hundreds of specimens of Philinopsis depicta, a species difficult to detect habitually, have also been observed.
The sampling, promoted by the City Council of Castelló d’Empúries together with Lass Dive and the Marina d’Empuriabrava, reinforces the environmental and scientific value of the canals, which function as a complex habitat where Mediterranean species adapted to port environments coexist.
This project consolidates the canals as an area of reference in the conservation of urban marine biodiversity and highlights the importance of continuing to develop monitoring and environmental awareness actions.
The biodiversity of the canals demonstrates that the coexistence of human activity and conservation is possible when managed with commitment and responsibility, with continuous monitoring to evaluate its evolution and strengthen the environmental management of this unique environment.
