This week, for the first time since the construction of the Marina d’Empuriabrava, a comprehensive bathymetric survey of its 23 kilometers of navigable channels is being carried out.
The work, commissioned by the marina concessionaire, will provide a detailed image of the seabed of the entire network of canals and will make it possible to know the exact depths of each section.
The work is being carried out by Drones for Geology and consists of the systematic collection of data along the entire length of the marina using specialized underwater inspection and measurement technology. Based on the information collected, a digital cartography of the seabed will be prepared to identify the variations in depth, detect sediment accumulations and evaluate possible erosion processes, as well as to locate those points that require specific attention.
The study will provide a valuable technical tool for the management of the port infrastructure, facilitating the planning of future maintenance actions and contributing to improve navigation conditions within the marina. It will also provide for the first time an objective and updated database on the condition of the channels, an essential element for their long-term conservation.
The Marina d’Empuriabrava began to be built at the end of the sixties on an extensive area of wetlands. That project profoundly transformed the economic and social reality of the municipality and the entire region, turning a town traditionally linked to agriculture into a tourist destination of reference. With its 23 kilometers of navigable canals, Empuriabrava is today one of the most important residential marinas in Europe and a unique urban model that has become one of its main signs of identity.
The completion of this study represents an important step in the knowledge and preservation of this unique infrastructure. The information obtained will allow to face with greater guarantees the future challenges of maintenance and conservation of the canals, reinforcing the commitment of the Marina d’Empuriabrava with innovation, sustainability and continuous improvement of its facilities.
