Works on the bridge over the main canal

At the end of October, Castelló d’Empúries Town Council began the renovation works on the bridge along Avenida de la República Catalana, which was showing significant signs of deterioration.

The aim of the project is to ensure road safety, improve mobility for both pedestrians and vehicles, and guarantee that the main canal remains navigable.

To ensure that the works are carried out safely and efficiently, the bridge has been closed to both road and water traffic since 3rd of November for a period of approximately six weeks. During this time, alternative routes have been set up to minimize disruption to traffic.

After the demolition of the old deck, work is now focused on installing the new bridge, which is being constructed with precast post-tensioned beams and a new compression slab. This new design will provide greater clearance, making it easier for boats to pass, while also improving the functionality and durability of the structure.

In addition, the project includes the renewal of affected utilities, pavements, footpaths, and railings, as well as the installation of new lighting, all with the aim of enhancing safety and improving the urban environment of the surrounding area.

This initiative is part of the Sustainable Tourism Plan for Destinations (PSTD) and is financed with Next Generation EU funds, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
